New Anthology For Art Garfunkel;
New CD/DVD Releases For Los Lobos
New CD/DVD Releases For Los Lobos
By Tom Wilk
Contributing Writer
From his days in Simon & Garfunkel to a solo career that’s now in its fifth decade, Art Garfunkel looks backs on a life in music with a new anthology.
Aptly titled “The Singer” (Columbia/Legacy), the two-CD, 34-song compilation offers a solid overview of his work that was selected and sequenced by the 70-year-old Garfunkel, who also offers personal commentary for each song.
The collection opens with “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” the stirring, gospel-flavored title track of the final studio album by Simon & Garfunkel. Other tracks highlight the vocal interplay and artistry of the duo, including “Scarborough Fair/Canticle)” and the acoustic version of “The Sound of Silence” from 1964.
On his own, Garfunkel ventured in new directions. He teamed up with James Taylor for a remake of “Cryin’ in the Rain,” a hit for the Everly Brothers, one of the early vocal influences on Simon & Garfunkel. Taylor and Simon joined Garfunkel” for a harmony-filled rendition of Sam Cooke’s “(What a) Wonderful World.”
Garfunkel displays his versatility throughout, ranging from the folk standard “Barbara Allen” to “I Only Have Eyes for You,” a 1950s hit for the Flamingos, and even a stab at bossa nova with Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Waters of March.”
“The Singer” also spotlights Garfunkel’s collaborations with Jimmy Webb, including a piano-and-voice reading of “All I Know” and lesser-known songs, such as “Scissors Cut” and “In Cars.”
With Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Some Enchanted Evening” from “South Pacific” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” from Lerner and Lowe’s “My Fair Lady,” Garfunkel adapts his tenor to some of Broadway’s most memorable songs.
Garfunkel has an occasional slip-up. His version of “When a Man Loves a Woman” falls short of Percy Sledge’s classic reading. Overall, “The Singer” is a reminder of the strengths of Garfunkel as a singer and interpreter.

Los Lobos, featuring saxophonist Steve Berlin, a native of the Philadelphia area, has drawn inspiration from traditional Mexican and Latin music, rock ‘n’ roll, the blues and country since the band formed in the 1970s.
The band revisits “Kiko,” one of its landmark albums, with a 20th anniversary live CD and DVD and a reissue of the original recording with five bonus tracks. All three releases are on the Shout! Factory label.
The live album features the group performing the entire 16-song CD at a 2006 concert. The DVD features three additional songs, including a spellbinding acoustic version of “La Bamba,” a version of their No. 1 single from 1987 that takes the song back to its original Mexican roots.
“Kiko” shows the eclectic roots of the band’s music, from the rhythm-and-blues feel of “Wicked Rain” to the spooky “Kiko and the Lavender Moon” and the rock-and-roll rave-up of “Whiskey Moon.”
As the band prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2013, Los Lobos remains an American musical treasure.
