Looking Back - Reminiscing with Jack Lebo
More Memories of Atlantic City, Vintage Cinema And Movie Stars
It seems like memories of old Atlantic City, before the casinos changed the town, are never-ending. F.R. Coceo penned a lengthy note describing her remembrances of Steel Pier during its heyday.
According to F.R.: “I enjoy reading about Atlantic City, but I never hear about that giant sailboat that was docked at the end of Steel Pier. In 1935, when I was 22 years old, I spent a week’s vacation down the shore. I stayed at an Italian hotel at Mississippi Avenue and the Boardwalk, across from Convention Hall. As I recall, the charge was $50 per week, for room and board, and that included three meals a day!”
During one of her visits to the Pier, she went to the end of the Pier and was surprised to discover a huge sailboat bobbing to and fro with the waves. She paid fifty cents for a half-hour ride aboard the vessel. According to F.R.: “It was an adventure getting on the boat, because of the waves tossing the boat about. There was a gentleman on the pier throwing you aboard when the waves were just right, and also another man catching you and getting you seated. I remember it was a very romantic ride, but in later years I never saw that boat again, possibly, because it was too dangerous!”

ORIGINAL BIRTH NAMES - Did you ever wonder about many of our entertainers’ birth names, before they took their stage names? Some of the names are quite a mouthful, so you can see why they had shortened them to fit on the marquee:
Woody Allen (Alan Stewart Koenigsberg), June Allyson (Ella Geisman), Lauren Bacall, (Betty Joan Perske), Cary Grant (Archie Leach), Kirk Douglas, (Issue Danielovich Demsky), Mel Brooks, (Melvin Kaminsky), Tony Curtis, (Bernard Schwartz), Jane Semour, (Joyce Penelope Frankenburg), Jerry Lewis, (Joseph Levitch), Mike Nichols, (Michael Peschkowsky), Elaine May, (Elaine Berlin), Bob Dylan, (Bobby Zimmerman), and Eddie Cantor, (Edward Israel Iskowitz).

Vintage Movies - Our resident movie maven Jules Schaeffer , delights in watching vintage films. Says Jules,”I watched this wonderful film the other night, ‘Naughty Marietta.’ It starred a team I never tire of seeing and hearing, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald. Also later, I watched ‘Footlight Parade,’ with James Cagney and Joan Blondell, and of course Frank McHugh. There couldn’t be a Cagney movie without Frank, he with that high-pitched staccato laugh.”

Mickey Green sends a listing of “Who is a senior citizen?” A senior citizen is one who was here before the pill and the population explosion, before television, Penicillin, frozen food, nylon, Dacron, Xerox, Radar, Fluorescent lights, credit cards, ball point pens, I-pods, computers, and Frisbees...disposable diapers, electric typewriters, Cheerios, and instant coffee.

A 43-year old gent, Jim McClory deserves a giant pat-on-the back and much more. According to Jim, shortly before his dad passed on, he told him, “Whatever you do son, ‘Don’t ever forget the old folks.’ McClory hasn’t forgotten that sage bit of advice since that day. Jim has dedicated all his free time traveling to various nursing homes, senior centers, and retirement communities throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey, providing entertainment for residents with his “Traveling Memorabilia Show.”
His typical program begins with opening remarks, the showing of a black and white Bugs Bunny, Popeye or Three Stooges film, followed by a viewing of a Memorabilia display.
Then Jim brings out his cassette tape player and presents a program of music that is guaranteed to bring back a flood of memories to the audience. A sampling of the musical portion of the program includes Ray Anthony playing “Chattanooga Choo-Choo,” Johnny Mercer singing, “Accentuate the Positive,” Dooley Wilson singing, “As Time Goes By,” Benny Goodman’s medley “You’re Mine You,” and “I’m Nobody’s Baby,” and Little Richard performing “The Girl Can’t Help it.”
These selections are all designed to please audiences of every type. The program ends with closing remarks from McClory. The complete show runs for approximately 40 minutes. Jim asks us to pass on that there is a minimal charge, just to defray his travel expenses, for all who desire his services. Some of his recent appearances include Brandywine Senior Suites, St. Mary’s Catholic Home, (Cherry Hill), Chester County Senior Expo, Spring Street Senior Center, (Boyertown) and American Heart Association, (Exton). To contact Jim McClory call (610) 649-6292.
