Steely Dan Co-Founder Pens 1st Book;
Jimi Hendrix Revived In New Release
Jimi Hendrix Revived In New Release
By Tom Wilk
Contributing Writer
Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen trades his musical keyboard for a computer keyboard in writing "Eminent Hipsters" (Viking; $26.95), his first book.
"Eminent Hipsters" is part memoir, part musical and cultural analysis. In the first part of the book, the 65-year-old Fagen pays tribute to those who inspired him as a boy growing up in Central and North Jersey -- Henry Mancini, Jean Shepherd, Ray Charles.
Of Mancini's work on the soundtracks for the TV series "Peter Gunn" and "Mr. Lucky," Fagen writes: "The music inspired me to learn more about jazz and the extramusical artifacts of the jazz life. I listened to late-night jazz jocks broadcasting out of Manhattan and got a subscription to Down Beat, which had a lot of photos of the top players."
That introduction to jazz laid the foundation for Fagen and Walter Becker to form Steely Dan, which merged jazz sensibilities and a rock approach, to become one of the most successful bands of the 1970s.
As a prose stylist, Fagen writes in a sharp, descriptive style in the manner of such Steely Dan songs as "Reelin' in the Years" and "Deacon Blues."
The second half of "Eminent Hipsters" is devoted to two pieces. "Class of '69" look backs to his days at Bard College, the inspiration for the Steely Dan song "My Old School." It's a briskly paced account of coming of age, socially and musically, amid the turbulence of the late 1960s.
"With the Dukes of September" is a chronicle of Fagen's tour across the United States and Canada in the summer of 2012 with Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald. Call it "Portrait of the Artist as an Older Man" as Fagen details the arduous pleasures and pitfalls of a life on the road at 64.
Fagen can come off as a curmudgeon and grouch, but he writes with an honesty and humor and doesn't spare himself from criticism.
After surveying an audience at a show in California, Fagen writes "Mike, Boz and I are pretty old and so is most of our audience. Tonight, though, the crowd looked so geriatric that I was tempted to start calling out bingo numbers. Nevertheless, by the end of the set, they were on their feet, albeit shakily, rocking out to Buddy Miles’ ‘Them Changes.’ So this, now, is what I do: assisted living."
Fagen's journal recalls Jim Bouton's classic "Ball Four," his diary of the 1969 baseball season in the Major and Minor Leagues. Like Bouton, Fagen explores a variety of issues beyond his chosen field. His account of the suicide of his wife's son is heartbreaking.
"Eminent Hipsters" is a concise read at 162 pages and leaves the reader wanting more. One hopes that Fagen will undertake a sequel someday.

From Monterey to Woodstock to the Isle of Wight, Jimi Hendrix seemed to thrive in the spotlight of music festivals during his brief career. Live performances before a large crowd seemed to energize him and his audience.
That's the case with "Jimi Hendrix Experience: Miami Pop Festival" (Experience Hendrix/Legacy Recordings). The CD features 10 recordings and his backing band recorded at Gulfstream Park in Hallendale, Fla., on May 18, 1968.
Hendrix focuses on songs from "Are You Experienced," his 1967 debut album. Selections include a pull-out-the-stops version of "Fire" featuring Hendrix's guitar wizardry and a fiery performance of "Purple Haze." Hendrix switches gears for for extended versions of "Hear My Train A-Comin'" and "Red House." The latter clocks in at 12 minutes and shows his mastery of the blues.
Released in conjunction with "Miami Pop Fesitval" is an expanded home video of the "American Masters" documentary of "Jimi Hendrix - Hear My Train A-Comin'" on DVD and Blu-Ray. The video features previously unreleased performance footage and home movies taken by Hendrix and drummer Mitch Mitchell.
