Study Warns Of High Cardiovascular Disease Risks Of Eating Yolks
By Alice Shaw
Contributing Writer
Years ago, doctors told their patients to avoid high cholesterol foods, especially egg yolks if they wanted to save themselves from heart disease. Then, in recent years, much of the medical community changed its mind and decided that the potential harm of high cholesterol intake, specifically from egg yolks, is insufficient.
That second decision is all wrong according to a group of Canadian scientists who recently completed a study showing that eating egg yolks is right up there with smoking in causing dangerous plaque to build up in carotid arteries. The study concentrated on plaque in carotid arteries, which are in the neck, because carotid plaque strongly predicts cardiovascular risks.
The Canadian researchers found that egg yolk consumption is significant with respect to cardiovascular disease even after adjusting for other coronary risk factors. They said: “Our findings suggest that regular consumption of egg yolks should be avoided by persons at risk of cardiovascular disease.”
This is particularly true, the researchers said, with respect to Type 2 diabetes. They said that earlier studies have shown “a relationship between egg yolk consumption and mortality in those with diabetes.” They added that a Greek study in diabetics showed that daily egg consumption increased coronary risk more than five-fold.
In view of the predicted increase in the incidence of Type 2 diabetes both in Western cultures and developing worlds, the researchers said, the harmful effect of egg consumption by diabetics is a particular concern. Furthermore, they said, there is also emerging evidence that egg consumption itself may be related to more people getting Type 2 diabetes. Therefore, they said, egg yolk consumption remains a public health concern.
The scientists said that all meals high in cholesterol should not be consumed regularly by those at risk for cardiovascular disease as dietary cholesterol itself is harmful. Increasingly, they said, studies are showing that vegetable oils and plant protein sources low in cholesterol and saturated fat “confer benefits in terms of heart disease risk and diabetes incidence.” They noted that the Mediterranean diet is now considered by many as the idea diet for reducing the risk of heart disease.
Finally, the researchers urged the scientific community to conduct more tests on the relationship between egg yolk consumption and heart disease. They said their study did not take into account, and it should have, exercise, waist circumference and dietary consumption of saturated fat other than eggs.
