New Book Looks At Four Decades Of Electric Factory Concerts
By Tom Wilk
Contributing Writer
Larry Magid never released an album or headlined at a club, but as a concert promoter he has presented some of the top musical acts in Philadelphia and the surrounding region for the past 40 years.
Magid, 68, offers a behind-the-scenes look at a life in music with “My Soul’s Been Psychedelicized: Electric Factory - Four Decades in Posters and Photographs” (Temple University Press; $39.95).
Co-written with Robert Huber, the book is an entertaining and informative recap of Magid’s career, from the opening of the original Electric Factory in 1968 to his role in staging international concerts — Live Aid in 1985 and Live 8 in 2005.
Magid and his partners in the early years — Allen, Herb and Jerry Spivak and Shelley Kaplan — helped to make Philadelphia an essential stop for any performer. Magid’s promotional work made the Spectrum one of the most popular music venues in the nation.
The intimate Bijou Cafe on Lombard Street in Philadelphia played host to a Who’s Who of American music and comedy in the 1970s and early 1980s, including Billy Joel, Linda Ronstadt, Hall and Oates, Jay Leno, David Letterman and Jerry Seinfeld.
Saxophonist Grover Washington Jr., a Philadelphia native, recorded a live album at the Bijou, famous for its balcony seating that provided a unique vantage point for audiences.
Magid also helped to stage the three-day Atlantic City Pop Festival at the Atlantic Race Course in August 1969, two weeks before its more famous counterpart at Woodstock in upstate New York.
Magid became well regarded for his professionalism and efficiency of his operation, presenting shows around the United States. The Rolling Stones chose Philadelphia to launch their national tours in 1981 and 1989.
In addition, Magid also got involved in other entertainment ventures. He helped stage Bette Midler’s “Clams on the Half Shell Revue” in 1975 and helped Billy Crystal bring his Tony Award-winning “700 Sundays” show to Broadway.
“My Soul’s Been Psychedelicized” offers a treasure trove of more than 200 photographs and concert posters, ranging from a youthful Pete Townshend performing “Tommy” in 1969 to Pearl Jam closing the Spectrum in 2009. This book is a journey through the past worth taking.
