Billy Joel’s ‘Love Songs’ Collects
18 Songs For Valentine Release
18 Songs For Valentine Release
By Tom Wilk
Contributing Writer
Romance and love and its consequences have been the underlying theme for many of Billy Joel’s songs during his recording career. Released in conjunction with Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14, “She’s Got a Way: Love Songs” (Columbia/Legacy) serves as an anthology of that body of work.
The CD collects 18 songs, originally released between 1971 and 1993, and reflects the musical diversity Joel brought to his recordings. The compilation is a good mix of singles and album selections.
“Travelin’ Prayer,” originally a single from “Piano Man,” his breakthrough album in 1973, is country flavored with is prominent use of bangs and, at the end, a funky use of jew’s-harp. “You’re My Home,” also from “Piano Man,” offers a wistful slice of folk-oriented pop.
“Until The Night,” originally released on “52nd Street” in 1978, utilizes strings to create a heightened sense of drama that recalls the work of the Drifters from the early 1960s. “This Is The Time” shows the mellower side of Joel and serves as a reminder to savor every day with a loved one.
“Shameless,” which Joel featured on “Storm Front” in 1989, became a No. 1 hit for Garth Brooks. “Nocture,” a pensive instrumental from “Cold Spring Harbor,” Joel’s 1971 debut album, puts the spotlight on his piano skills.
No collection of Joel’s love songs could be complete without “Just The Way You Are,” which earned him Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The relaxed ballad dominated the radio airwaves in 1977 and 1978 and, along with “Piano Man,” became one of his signature songs.
While Joel has not released an album of new songs since “River of Dreams” is in 1993, “Love Songs” is a testament to his songwriting skills and pop craftsmanship.
