CD Reissues Shine Spotlight On Music
Of Donny Hathaway, Heart
Of Donny Hathaway, Heart
By Tom Wilk
Contributing Writer
A third of a century after his death, Donny Hathaway may be best remembered as the duet partner of Roberta Flack on such hit singles as “Where is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You.”
As a solo artist, Hathaway was a riveting performer in concert. His music was a seamless blend of soul, jazz and pop, delivered with a voice that combined power and conviction.
Shout! Factory has reissued “Donny Hathaway Live + In Performance,” a two-CD collection of concert recordings from the 1970s. On “Live,” the first CD, Hathaway’s impassioned version of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” kicks off the album on a high note. In his liner notes, David Ritz points out how moved Gaye was by the performance. “I had to ask myself - did I write it or did he?” It sounded like it came out of his soul as much as mine,” Gaye told Ritz.
Hathaway’s recording of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” adds a touch of gospel flavor as he engages the audience in call-and-response vocals. Hathaway bares his soul on John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy,” as his piano work gives the song an added lift.
On “The Ghetto” and “Voices Inside (Everything is Everything),” Hathaway gives his band a chance to shine. The former, a Hathaway original, builds in intensity, thanks to the percussion work of Fred White and Earl DeRouen.
A bass solo by Willie Weeks brings the latter to a fitting climax.
On “In Performance,” the second CD, Hathaway finds a groove on his rendition of Nina Simone’s “Young, Gifted and Black,” a song that hits close to home for the singer. For Leon Russell’s “A Song For You,” Hathaway captures the intimacy of the lyric with a quiet passion. It’s a reminder of the music world’s loss when Hathaway died at age 33.

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson remain the creative force behind Heart, the group whose blend of folk and rock led to its commercial success and heavy rotation on the FM airwaves, starting in the mid-1970s.
“Strange Euphoria” (Epic Records/Legacy Recordings), a three-CD, one-DVD box sets traces their artistic evolution over 13 studio albums and other recordings. The 51 songs were selected by the Wilsons themselves.
In addition, more than 20 selections are previously unreleased. Early recordings of “Magic Man,” heard in a stripped-down version, and “Crazy on You” offer insights into the artistic process.
As a vocalist, Ann Wilson easily made the transition from the acoustic intimacy of “Dog + Butterfly” to the full-throat roar of “Barracuda,” included here in a fiery concert recording. Stylistically, Heart recalled Led Zeppelin, a connection made implicit her in a live version from 1994 of “Never” featuring John Paul Jones on mandolin and string arrangements.
“The Second Ending - featuring Heart,” the DVD in the box set, captures the band in concert in early 1976 and is taken from a television program that aired in their native Washington state.
