Two CD-Set Features Elvis In Hawaii;
Eric Burdon Has New Release
Eric Burdon Has New Release

Elvis Presley was not one to shy away from challenges.
"Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite: Legacy Edition" (RCA/Legacy) found the singer performing in concert in January 1973 for an international broadcast audience estimated in the hundreds of millions, a record for the time.
Released on March 19 in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Honolulu concerts, the two-CD set of "Aloha From Hawaii" features the 38-year-old Elvis running through a retrospective of his work.
He sounds most at home on the dramatic ballads, using them to take comfort in the midst of marital difficulties with his wife, Priscilla. (The two would divorce in October 1973.)
Marty Robbins' "You Gave Me a Mountain" details the breakup of a couple's marriage, which Elvis uses to project his own pain. On "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," he captures the desolation of Hank Williams' original hit.
Elvis displays his upbeat side on "Burning Love," the rocker that he made a Top 5 hit in 1972, and revels in the bluesy humor of James Taylor's "Steamroller Blues."
On his 1950s hits, Elvis falls short. He delivers perfunctory readings of "Hound Dog" and "Blue Suede Shoes." The former clocks in at just 45 seconds, while the latter lasts just over a minute. A medley of Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally" and Jerry Lee Lewis' "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" is only marginally better.
With a bass-and-drum arrangement on "Fever," Elvis fares better, delivering a smoldering reading of the song that was a hit for both Little Willie John and Peggy Lee. The second CD features an alternate version of the concert and includes five bonus tracks, including a wistful version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain."

Eric Burdon was the voice of the Animals in the 1960s, delivering such memorable AM radio hits as "House of the Rising Sun," "It's My Life" and "We Gotta Get Out of This Place.
At 71, Burdon may have lost a little of his vocal range, but he remains a powerful singer on "'Til Your River Runs Dry" (ABKCO Records). Burdon had a hand in writing 10 of the 12 songs, which explore the state of the world ("Water" and "Memorial Day") and the struggle between good and evil ("Devil and Jesus").
He shows a quieter side on the jazz-tinged "Wait," which features the flamenco guitar work of Eric McFadden. Burdon pays tribute to one of his musical heroes with a rousing "Bo Diddley Special" and a version of Diddley's "Before You Accuse Me," which wraps up the album.
"Til Your River Runs Dry" shows Burdon remains a vital artist and isn't ready to hang up his rock’n roll shoes.
